Hockey fans searching for how to watch Maple Leafs vs Canadiens live stream can catch the 2026-27 NHL season preseason opener on Saturday, September 19, at 7:00 PM ET. Canadian viewers can stream live through Sportsnet Plus and TVA Sports, while fans in the United States can access coverage on ESPN Plus and NHL Network.
The 2026-27 campaign represents the historic 110th season of operation and 109th season of play for the National Hockey League. Marking the league transition to an expanded 84 game regular season schedule, exhibition action kicks off with an iconic Original Six double header between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens.
With coaching staffs evaluating expanded training camp rosters and testing new tactical formations, hockey fans across North America need verified puck drop schedules, broadcast networks, and cord cutter streaming alternatives.
The 2026-27 NHL Season Context: Historic 84 Game Expansion
The 2026-27 NHL season introduces fundamental structural modifications to the league calendar. For the first time since the 1993-94 season, the NHL and the NHL Players Association expanded the regular season calendar to 84 games per team, leading to a streamlined eight day exhibition window running from September 19 through September 26.
This condensed preseason format elevates the stakes of opening weekend. Coaching staffs no longer have six or seven warmup games to evaluate roster prospects. Every shift during the split squad double header between Toronto and Montreal directly impacts which players survive final roster cuts before the regular season begins on September 29.
The Split Squad Dynamic: Two Rivalry Clashes In One Night
Opening night of the 2026-27 exhibition schedule features an aggressive scheduling format where the Maple Leafs and Canadiens contest two simultaneous games on Saturday evening.
One half of each roster meets at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, while the remaining squads battle at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Both head coaches utilize these simultaneous fixtures to test prospect conditioning, special teams penalty killing units, and backup goaltender rotation under full game pressure.
For viewers, this split squad configuration delivers continuous action. Top draft selections compete directly against established veterans fighting to protect their opening night roster spots.
